We love people. We love brewing. We really really love people who brew. That's why we're happy to announce the 2015 What's Brewing Homebrew Competition with Bryggselv!

This year’s competition will be focused loosely around two of our favorite beer styles, instead of an open category competition like last year. We feel that we need to have a homebrew competition that follows the spirit of the festival. And it’s not the beer that’s best according to “style” that wins, but the craziest, most interesting, still drinkable and hopefully well-balanced yum-yum beer that rules them all.

Categories:

1. Stout/Porter (Strong, dark & dangerous)

Let’s brew something wonderful and crazy for this year’s competition. We challenge you to go outside the box with this strong and dark beer. Using ingredients like chili, vanilla, ginger, real chocolate, cocoa nibs, hibiscus, oak, lactose, star anise, licorice, juniper berries, fruits, herbs and other natural and flavorful ingredients.

Requirements: Minimum 6 % abv & at least one ingredient that isn’t water, barley, hops & yeast. Dark beer.

2. Farmhouse style ales (Fresh, funky & fruity)

Same thing goes for the Farmhouse ales regarding ingredients. Use your imagination. We recommend you to think old school and maybe find some local ingredients. The base beer could be anything from Saison, IPA, Blonde and so on, fermented with Saison yeast, brettanomyces, local wild yeast and/or farmhouse yeast blends. It’s difficult to put farmhouse ales into separate classes, as they could be so different, so get creative.

Bryggselv has its own exclusive yeast strain called WLP6788, Norwegian Farmhouse ale that produces a Belgian saison-ish yeast character. This strain is 100% saccharomyces and even though it doesn’t contain any brettanomyces or wild yeast, beers brewed with this strain will also be regarded as a farmhouse ale.

Requirements: Minimum 5% abv & at least one ingredient that isn’t water, barley, hops & yeast. Yeast character should be according to style.

Prizes will be awesome, we'll announce them next week at What's Brewing's Facebook page.

Deadline & how to deliver/register:

The first 30 to register in each category will be our participants, and yes you can compete in both categories with two different beers. Send e-mail to our head beer judge Aleksander Baustad from Bryggselv at homebrewing@whatsbrewing.no to be a part of this, and he will replay with your participant number. (Code)

The beers must be sent and delivered to Bryggselv Stavanger no later than Wednesday 30 September 2015. 4 bottles of each beer, minimum bottle size 33 cl, bottles should be blank/unmarked with the code you received from the e-mail written on the cork. Also, to protect yourself from judges who might not be as brewistically enlightened as you, please add a brew sheet so we can understand what the hell you were trying to pull off.

Winners will be announced at What’s Brewing 2015, exactly when and where is still TBA.
